Our rangers were out and about on the weekend of the 13/14 of June. Here's what they saw:
Saturday 13th June
Heron, Marsh harrier, Reed Bunting and Greater Spotted Woodpecker were all seen around Woodwalton Fen. On the water Common Tern, Cormorant and Mallard were all seen as well as a number of juvenile Coot. Aside from birds the beetle populations are more in evidence with several Longhorn beetles being observed as well as a number of Dragonflies.
Over at Holme Fen, the weather was overcast and rain was a constant problem. Heron, Kestrel and Mallard were all seen from the Trundle Mere lookout as well as a Red Fox out hunting.
Sunday 14th June
The weather on Sunday showed some sign of improvement though was generally overcast with sunny spells.
Hobby (2) were seen hunting for insects from the Trundle Mere lookout as well as good numbers of Common Buzzard (>4). Also in the area were Little Egret (2), Tree Sparrow (3) and a Grey Partridge.
There were also several good sightings of butterflies and dragonflies from the Last of the Meres trails near Engine farm. Large Skipper, Painted Lady and Orange Tip butterflies were spotted, whilst Black-tailed Skimmer (>10), Scarce Chaser, Four-spotted Chaser (>10) and Hairy Dragonfly (2) were all active.
