The wild fens once stretched for hundreds of miles across Eastern England and provided essential habitats for some unique wildlife. When this land was drained in the 17th century, most of this wildlife habitat was lost, together with the traditional way of life of the inhabitants. On the western edge of the original fenland, two fragments remain, Woodwalton Fen and Holme Fen. The Great Fen will be connecting these precious fragments with recreated wetland areas, providing a vast landscape for people and wildlife.
The project area lies between Peterborough and Huntingdon. Leaving the AI(M) at junction 16, follow the B660 east towards Ramsey. After the railway level-crossing, the road goes directly through the project area with the Birch woodland of Holme Fen to the north and Woodwalton Fen on the distant south-east horizon.
