A study by the University of East Anglia has confirmed that the fens provide a home to 13 globally rare species and a quarter of the country's rarest wildlife.
Although only 8 main wetland sites and less than 1% of the original wetland habitat remains, the Fens are still home to 13,474 species of plants, insects, birds, fish and mammals.
The BBC account of the research is here.
More details are here.
Many of the rare species occur on the National Nature Reserves of Woodwalton Fen and Holme Fen.
