People and Communities

The Great Fen offers a wide range of services for people and communities, thanks to support from a range of funders, including Heritage Lottery Fund and BGL group.

We work with a wide range of schools and groups, with activities including shelter-building and bushcraft skills for youth groups, and memory box and reminiscence visits for older people.

This work has included film, photo and audio projects, including an 'oral history project' to record local people's stories of growing up in the fens.

We run visits for all ages and abilities, and offer sensory experiences, wildlife and history walks and much more:

• Events programme: including walks, talks, workshops, family and community events. See our Events Programme.
• Education services: including assemblies and school visits, and higher education. See our Education pages
• Visitor services: We are also continually developing new information and activities on the website, nature reserves and in the restored areas, including trail guides and downloadable activities, information boards and virtual tours. See also Places to Visit.
• Talks for groups: including 'The Great Fen in Photographs and Film', 'The Great Fen in Memories' and 'Restoration on the Great Fen'
• Great Fen Film show: You can arrange to have a film show of the 37 minute film 'Memories from the Fen', including Behind the Scenes footage shown for your group
• Guided walks for groups to areas of the Great Fen. See also Places to Visit.
• Community group services: including youth outreach and visits, community group outreach visits for all ages and abilities, memory box loan and day centre/ sheltered housing visits
• Access facilities: including free hire of an all terrain access buggy, hearing helper systems and tactile MP3 player
• Volunteering: We work with more than 100 volunteers. See Volunteering to find out about the wide range of opportunities on offer.

Wildlife Trust Countryside Centre available for hire

When staff and volunteers are on site, the Wildlife Trust Countryside Centre is available to hire for a donation.

Tea, coffee and biscuits can be provided. A powerpoint projector, projector stand and flipcharts and pens are also available.

The centre also provides a good base from which to explore Woodwalton Fen with your group.

Plans for the Future

There are many activities and new visitor facilities planned for the future Great Fen, including new cycling and walking routes, and a visitor centre.
